Advantages of polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is the most common plastic material in the world after polyethylene (PE). Like PE, PP is also relatively cheap, but PP has a higher impact resistance than PE. In addition, the material has a high chemical resistance and does not absorb moisture. PP is therefore a plastic that is resistant to solvents, bases and acids.

Within polypropylene, a distinction can be made between homopolymer (PPH) and copolymer (PPC). A homopolymer is stiffer and stronger than a copolymer. The copolymer is softer, but on the other hand has a higher impact resistance. This makes it more resistant to stress and tougher at low temperatures.

Polypropylene (PP) and its uses

Because PP has a high temperature range and high impact resistance, the material has excellent mechanical properties. PP is therefore one of the most versatile thermal plastics and is extremely suitable for applications in technical constructions. By melting the polypropylene granules, we can convert them into various end applications, such as (film) hinges, measuring scoops, wheelie bins, medical pipette tubes and fastening clips.

Polypropylene (PP) Considerations

Are you considering opting for polypropylene? Then it is important to take the following factors into account:

  • With thick-walled products, polypropylene can occasionally lead to sink marks;
  • Polypropylene has poor UV stability, making it less suitable for outdoor applications;
  • At (extremely) low temperatures, polypropylene becomes brittle. PP retains its shape at temperatures between -15 and 90 degrees Celsius.
